The collective blindness that has, for decades, accompanied all kinds of behaviour against women seems to be finally reaching a point of no return. In the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct against the powerful Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, the issue has gained startling momentum with thousands of women opening up to the public with stories of sexual assault and harassment.
On social media, the hashtag #metoo has encouraged many women to publish their experiences. As millions use it to highlight personal and shocking incidents, the awareness campaign is revealing the scale of such widespread misogynistic conduct.
Now, those previously silent are denouncing inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour. It is a global issue, transcending borders, race and social class. Thanks to the courage of many women who are now speaking out and often as a result of social and professional reprimand; today we are finally facing a tipping point. Importantly, we are witnessing consequences for perpetrators, with ministers resigning from their jobs and powerful producers and actors facing legal penalties. After decades of collective denial of the violence against women, the sexual harassment and abuse has finally stopped being passed aside.
But there is still a long way to go in regards to ending such misconduct. Therefore, it is vital to take advantage of this greater awareness to create prevention plans that start in schools and involve businesses, public institutions and the media. In all areas of society, intolerance to sexual violence must become the norm. A complete overhaul in social attitudes and practices is necessary, and nothing should remain as before.
