Events of the recent past have shaken the world to its core. From unprecedented changes in weather that has taken a toll on key facets of mankind, violation of human rights across the globe, a battered environment that has made certain areas uninhabitable while sparking conflicts at a scale never witnessed before, to the COVID-19 pandemic that has grinded the world to a halt; the 21st century has redefined livelihoods and humankind’s relations.
That is why now more than ever, as the world celebrates the International Human Solidarity Day this month, the world should pause and reflect on these happenings while exploring how to foster unity in diversity at a time when social class gaps, widening space between the poor and rich and religious intolerance have become more pronounced.
When 189 global leaders picked solidarity as a crucial value to inspire the 21st-century relations between nations some 15 years ago, they were guided by the mantra that “Global challenges must be managed in a way that distributes the costs and burdens fairly and in accordance with basic principles of equity and social justice. Those who suffer or who benefit least deserve help from those who benefit most.”
Ten years to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and as the world looks at leaving no one behind in creating a just and prosperous world for all, solidarity remains the guiding light in inspiring initiatives that will help the world attain these all crucial goals while inspiring a new world order guided by respect for human rights and coexistence.
